Daily Abstracts 2007-present

I began making these abstracts at Pratt Institute, being inspired by Gerhard Richter’s squeegeed abstracts and Mark Rothko’s colorfield paintings. Cumulative layers of paint are dragged across a rigid support, lifted off, and placed back down. As colors mix on the panel, blurs, marks, lines, and light intrinsically emerge. I take notice and work with the unique blends, surface breaks, and other incidental details that come forth. As the painting evolves over time, I make intuitive decisions based on work’s progression. I use the basic conventions of painting, i.e., using color and line to create balance, luminance, and an illusionary sense of space – as a compass for my decisions.  Each painting takes its title from the day on which it is completed.  Click here

Gouache

An offshoot of the larger oil paintings, these watercolors can conjure ideas of abstracted landscapes or blooms, or even perhaps, creatures that float underwater.  Like the oils, the gouache paintings are process oriented and formalist in nature, while garnering a lightness and spontaneity inherited from their medium.  The works are done in gouache on a BFK Rives archival watercolor paper.  Click here

Prints

“Details” or, isolated portions of paintings, that have been developed into full size, archival quality prints.  By focusing on smaller happenings within the original piece and adjusting the camera angle to garner a new sense of space, works within works are found.  See gallery for selections or contact directly regarding pricing, prints of specific works, and/or custom sizes. Printed in Germany with archival inks on acid free Hahnemühle mould paper. Sizes include 1 inch border.  Click here
